Yellow Oriole

The Story

I photographed this Yellow Oriole (Icterus nigrogularis) in Taganga, near Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, at about 65 meters. Its wings are mostly black with white edges on the flight feathers and yellow coverts. The species lives across northern South America, including northern Colombia from the Caribbean coast south along the Magdalena River, as well as Trinidad, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. In Colombia it reaches 2,600 meters, though elsewhere it stays mostly below 1,200.

I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender for this one, at 1/1500 sec, f/16, ISO 1600, −0.5 EV. Taganga is a traditional fishing village about 3 kilometers north of Santa Marta, and both were founded by Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1525.
