The Story
I photographed this Orange-chinned Parakeet (Brotogeris jugularis) in Taganga, near Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, at about 65 meters. Its diet is mostly fruit and seeds but also includes flowers, nectar, insects and even algae. Its common calls are a high klee, a shrill chree and a two-note chree-chree, given perched or in flight. It nests in old woodpecker holes, natural cavities or holes it digs in termite nests. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. Like many parrots, it also eats mineral-rich soil.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender for this one, at 1/1500 sec, f/16, ISO 1600, −0.5 EV. Taganga and Santa Marta, both founded in 1525, are two of the oldest remaining colonial settlements in Colombia.
