Rufous-tailed Hummingbird

The Story

I photographed this Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) at Finca Ecoturística San Javier, in the vereda Chucuní near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia. It lives from east-central Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, up to about 1,800 meters in Colombia. Like most hummingbirds it feeds on nectar and small insects, and it is often seen in coffee and banana plantations and at sugar-water feeders. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. It is 9 to 11 centimeters long and weighs about 5 grams.

I photographed it with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/350 sec, f/11, ISO 1600, +0.5 EV. Finca San Javier offers guided birding as part of its work to help conserve the tropical dry forest of the Chucuní area.
