Rose-ringed Parakeet

The Story

The shot

I found this Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) perched on a slanting twig in Sanjay Van, a city forest in south Delhi, India, on an October morning in 2025. Sanjay Van is part of Delhi’s South-Central Ridge, an arm of the ancient Aravalli hills. Rose-ringed Parakeets are native to India, where they live in forests, farmland and cities, and they nest in tree holes and old masonry. It is a new species for my list.

I photographed it with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/60 sec, f/11, ISO 3200, with −1.5 EV exposure compensation. IUCN lists the Rose-ringed Parakeet as Least Concern with an increasing population, and forests like Sanjay Van give it the old trees it needs to nest inside the city.

The bird

The Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) belongs to the family Psittaculidae (Old World Parrots) in the eBird/Clements taxonomy.
