Black-bellied Whistling-Duck

La historia

This Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) was at Posada Turística Kenisha in Prado, Tolima, Colombia when I photographed it. Both parents share every task in raising the young, from incubation to rearing the ducklings. At the heart of its range it tends to travel in flocks in the winter months. It usually nests in hollow trees, and in South America often in palm trees. Pairs often stay together for many years. Prado’s main attraction is the Darío Echandía reservoir, an artificial lake fed by the Cunday and Negro rivers.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 3200. IUCN lists the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck as Least Concern, with an increasing population.
