Brown-throated Parakeet

The Story

I photographed this Brown-throated Parakeet (Eupsittula pertinax) in La Macarena, Meta, Colombia on July 6, 2017. In Colombia it reaches 2,600 meters, though elsewhere it is found mostly below 1,200 meters. Immature birds show very little yellow. Its crown, nape and upperparts are green, and its belly is grass green with an orange patch in the center. IUCN lists the species as Least Concern. Sierra de la Macarena National Natural Park, created in 1971, covers 6,200 square kilometers where the plants and animals of the Amazon, Orinoco and Andes meet. In 1948 the central part of the Serranía de la Macarena became the first national reserve in Colombia.

I took this with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400. The park here protects a meeting point of Amazon, Orinoco and Andean wildlife, and responsible visits help support it.
