The Story
This is a Brown-throated Parakeet (Eupsittula pertinax) that I photographed in La Macarena, Meta, Colombia on July 6, 2017. It lives in savannas, dry scrub, mangroves, many kinds of forest and farmland with some trees left standing. In Colombia it reaches 2,600 meters, though elsewhere it is found mostly below 1,200 meters. Its crown, nape and upperparts are green, and its belly is grass green with an orange patch in the center. The nearby Serranía de la Macarena is an isolated mountain range about 120 kilometers long, separated from the Eastern Andes.
I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400. IUCN lists the Brown-throated Parakeet as Least Concern with a stable population, and the Sierra de la Macarena has been a national natural park since 1971, protecting 6,200 square kilometers where Amazon, Orinoco and Andean wildlife meet.
