Rusty-margined Flycatcher

The Story

This is a Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) that I photographed at the Parque del Café near Montenegro, Quindío, Colombia on June 14, 2017. It feeds mostly on insects, often sallying out over water, and also eats small fruits. In Colombia it is found from sea level to about 2,000 meters. It lives in partly open country, including farmland, clearings, pastures with shrubs and forest edges, and favors places near water. A museum about the history and culture of coffee growing is linked to the park’s rides by gondolas, a chairlift and an ecological trail through a plantation of many coffee varieties.

I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Rusty-margined Flycatcher as Least Concern with a stable population, and the center of Montenegro, home to the park, has been part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 2011.
