The Story
I photographed this White-throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus) at La Reserva Finca Turística, near San Juan de Arama, Meta, Colombia, in January 2020. It lives throughout the Amazon Basin, mostly in humid tropical forest. Among toucans, only the Toco Toucan is larger. It eats mainly fruit, but it also takes insects, lizards, eggs and small birds. It nests in a cavity high in a decayed living tree or in an old woodpecker hole, and both parents incubate. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/200 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. Accelerating deforestation in the Amazon is the main threat to it, along with hunting and trapping for the pet trade, and it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
