Scarlet-fronted Parakeet

The Story

I photographed this Scarlet-fronted Parakeet (Psittacara wagleri) in the vereda Chapacual, near Yacuanquer in Nariño, Colombia. It lives in Colombia and Venezuela, in a broken-up range between about 350 and 2,500 meters, and it travels in large flocks. It nests from April to June in Venezuela and from December to June in northern Colombia. It breeds in colonies, usually in fissures in cliff faces. IUCN lists it as Near Threatened: its population is believed to be decreasing, and the main threats are trapping, persecution and habitat loss.

I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 for this one, at 1/60 sec, f/11, ISO 3200, −1 EV. In the vereda Chapacual, 35 farm families grow coffee and keep agroecological gardens together with the Asociación para el Desarrollo Campesino.
