The Story
I photographed this Yellow-crowned Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala) at El Escondite Reserva Natural in Villagarzón, Putumayo, Colombia. It lives in the Amazon basin and the Guianas, with other populations in northwestern South America and Panama. The red and dark blue parts of its wings are often hard to see when the bird is perched. Apart from the wing speculum, young birds show little yellow or red. Villagarzón is known as the heart of Putumayo for its rich biodiversity, and its town center sits at about 426 meters. The municipality lies in the Amazon piedmont and is watered by rivers such as the San Juan, the Conejo and the Putumayo.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. IUCN lists the Yellow-crowned Amazon as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.
