The Story
I photographed this White-vented Plumeleteer (Chalybura buffonii) at Qawana Reserva Natural near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia, at about 1,300 meters. It is a large hummingbird, 10.5 to 12 centimeters long, found in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. Males are dark metallic green with long white undertail coverts, the white vent of its name, and a blue-black tail. Its nest is a cup of plant down bound with spiderweb and covered with moss and lichen. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/90 sec, f/11, ISO 3200, +1 EV. Ibagué has more than 551 recorded bird species, and a SiB Colombia bird-monitoring project there describes birdwatching as an important strategy for both development and conservation.
