White-vented Plumeleteer

The Story

This is a White-vented Plumeleteer (Chalybura buffonii) that I photographed near Filandia, Quindío, Colombia on June 18, 2017. It is a hummingbird of Panama and northern South America, 10.5 to 12 centimeters long. It is named for its long white undertail coverts. Filandia is the northernmost town in Quindío, about 26 kilometers north of Armenia, at 1,923 meters above sea level. The canyon of the Barbas River, on the edge of Filandia, holds about 790 hectares of very humid premontane forest between 1,500 and 2,100 meters.

I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 500. IUCN lists the White-vented Plumeleteer as Least Concern with a decreasing population, and the Barbas-Bremen soil conservation district protects about 4,910 hectares of Filandia and Circasia, including the Barbas canyon.
