The Story
I photographed this White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) at Finca Ecoturística San Javier, in the vereda Chucuní near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia. It usually lives from sea level to about 900 meters and feeds on nectar at the flowers of tall trees, epiphytes, shrubs and Heliconia plants. Several may feed in one tree and are aggressive to each other, but otherwise they are seldom territorial. It apparently moves seasonally as flower abundance changes. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/350 sec, f/11, ISO 3200, +1 EV. Finca San Javier offers guided birding as part of its work to help conserve the tropical dry forest of the Chucuní area.
