White-eared Jacamar

The Story

This White-eared Jacamar (Galbalcyrhynchus leucotis) perched in the foliage near Puerto Nariño, in Amazonas, Colombia, showing its chestnut plumage, white ear patch and heavy pink bill. It is found in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, below about 500 meters. The nests described for this species, one in Ecuador and one in Peru, were cavities dug into termite nests high in trees. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender for this one, at 1/350 sec, f/16, ISO 1600, −1 EV. On the nearby Tarapoto lakes, a nursery for river dolphins and fish, 22 Indigenous communities agreed on fishing rules that Colombia’s fisheries authority AUNAP recognized in 2017.
