White-bearded Manakin

The Story

I photographed this White-bearded Manakin (Manacus manacus) at La Reserva Finca Turística, near San Juan de Arama, Meta, Colombia, in January 2020. It lives in forest, secondary growth and plantations from Colombia, Venezuela and Trinidad to Bolivia and northern Argentina. Males are black and white with orange legs, while females are olive-green. Each displaying male clears a patch of forest floor to bare earth and leaps between perches and the ground with loud wing snaps. It eats fruit and some insects and spiders. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/125 sec, f/5.6, ISO 3200. It is fairly common and has a very wide range, and its population is thought to be stable.
