Thick-billed Euphonia

The Story

I photographed this Thick-billed Euphonia (Euphonia laniirostris) at the Mirador Turístico Don Yo, on the old road from Villavicencio to Bogotá, Colombia, in January 2020. It is quite vocal and a good mimic of other birds’ calls. It usually forages in pairs or small groups and often joins mixed-species flocks. In Colombia its breeding season appears to run from April to July. Males are glossy blue-black above and bright yellow below, with a yellow forehead, while females are olive-green. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. It occurs in many protected areas, and although most of its habitat is unprotected, it appears to be at little risk in the near term.
