The Story
I made this photo of a Spot-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes punctigula) at Ecohotel La Fortuna in Yopal, Casanare, Colombia. It usually forages in pairs or family groups, from the ground up to the middle levels of the forest. Both sexes dig the nest cavity, usually in a tree but sometimes in a fence post. It has a large vocal repertoire. It lives in rainforest, gallery forest, várzea, mangroves, llanos, palm savanna and treed plantations such as shade coffee. In Colombia its breeding season runs from October to May. Yopal is the capital of Casanare.
I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/200 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Spot-breasted Woodpecker as Least Concern, with a stable population.
