The Story
I photographed this Spot-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes punctigula) at Ecohotel La Fortuna in Yopal, Casanare, Colombia. Both sexes dig the nest cavity, usually in a tree but sometimes in a fence post. It has a large vocal repertoire. It lives in rainforest, gallery forest, várzea, mangroves, llanos, palm savanna and treed plantations such as shade coffee. In Colombia its breeding season runs from October to May. Males and females look alike except on the head, where females show red only at the back of the crown. Yopal is the capital of Casanare.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/160 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Spot-breasted Woodpecker as Least Concern, with a stable population.
