The Story
I photographed this Spectacled Parrotlet (Forpus conspicillatus) at Finca Ecoturística San Javier, in the vereda Chucuní near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia. It lives no higher than about 1,600 meters and prefers open habitat to dense forest, so its populations are stable and possibly growing as land is cleared. In the wild it eats seeds, nuts, leaves, berries, cactus, tamarind and other fruits. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender for this one, at 1/30 sec, f/16, ISO 1600, +0.5 EV. Finca San Javier began as a pig farm in 1997 and turned to ecotourism in 2017, offering guided birding and aiming to help conserve tropical dry forest.
