Southern House Wren

The Story

I photographed this Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) at Pozos La Chorrera, near Acacías, Meta, Colombia, in January 2020. It ranges from southern Mexico to southern Chile and Argentina. It was formerly treated as the same species as the Northern House Wren, Troglodytes aedon. Its species name, musculus, is Latin for little mouse. Its genus name, Troglodytes, means hole dweller, after its habit of disappearing into crevices to hunt insects or take shelter. IUCN lists it as Least Concern, with a stable population.

I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/400 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. Clear water running down from the mountain forms natural pools at Pozos La Chorrera, set in native vegetation.
