The Story
This is a Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) that I photographed at PANACA in Quimbaya, Quindío, Colombia on June 15, 2017. It is a very small wren found from southern Mexico to southern Chile and Argentina. The genus name Troglodytes means hole dweller, after its habit of slipping into crevices to hunt insects or take shelter. It was split from the house wren complex because of deep genetic differences and differences in voice and shape. The 47-hectare park has interactive exhibits and more than 200 species of animals.
I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/500 sec, f/6.3, ISO 1600. Every December 7 and 8 since 1982, Quimbaya’s neighborhoods have competed to light the town in the Candles and Lanterns Festival.
