Slate-Throated Whitestart Filandia Quindio Colombia

The Story

This is a Slate-throated Redstart (Myioborus miniatus) that I photographed near Filandia, Quindío, Colombia on June 19, 2017. It is a small, long-tailed New World warbler of humid highland forests from Mexico through Central America and the Andes. It lives from the upper understory to the mid canopy, at about 600 to 2,500 meters above sea level. Its scientific name, miniatus, is Latin for painted vermilion. The Barbas canyon forest is part of the Barbas-Bremen protected area on the border of Quindío and Risaralda.

I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Slate-throated Redstart as Least Concern with a decreasing population, and the Barbas-Bremen soil conservation district protects about 4,910 hectares of Filandia and Circasia, including the Barbas canyon.
