Silvery-throated Spinetail

The Story

I photographed this Silvery-throated Spinetail (Synallaxis subpudica) at the Forest of Orchids, a private reserve in the vereda Chincé near Tabio and Tenjo, Cundinamarca, Colombia. It lives only in Colombia’s Eastern Andes, mostly between 2,100 and 3,200 meters, at the edges of montane forest and in second-growth scrub. Its nest is a bulky mass of thorny sticks with a horizontal entrance tube and a moss-lined egg chamber. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. Its wing coverts are chestnut.

I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/1000 sec, f/11, ISO 800, −1 EV. The Forest of Orchids is restoring land that was once cleared and burned, and it received Colombia’s Premio Nacional Ambiental in 2023.
