The Story
This is a Scarlet-fronted Parakeet (Psittacara wagleri) that I photographed near Filandia, Quindío, Colombia on June 18, 2017. It lives at the edges of cloud forest, in deciduous and secondary forest, and also in fields, orchards and city parks. It travels in large flocks and usually forages in the forest canopy for fruit, nuts and seeds. It was placed in the genus Aratinga for a time and has been in Psittacara since about 2013. Filandia is the northernmost town in Quindío, about 26 kilometers north of Armenia, at 1,923 meters above sea level.
I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1250. IUCN lists the Scarlet-fronted Parakeet as Near Threatened with a decreasing population, and red howler monkeys have started using the restoration corridors planted since the 2000s to link the Barbas canyon forest with the Bremen forest.
