Rusty-margined Flycatcher

The Story

I photographed this Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) at the Finca Ecoturística Canaguaros, near Tauramena, Casanare, Colombia, in January 2020. It is named for the thin rusty edges on its wing feathers. It has a white eyebrow, a dark face and a mostly hidden yellow-orange crown patch. It eats mostly insects, often sallying out over water, and adds small fruit. Its nest is a bulky dome of twigs and grass with a side entrance, placed fairly openly in a branch fork. IUCN lists it as Least Concern, with a stable population.

I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/1600 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. It tolerates converted habitats and occurs in many national parks and other protected areas throughout its large range.
