Rusty-margined Flycatcher

The Story

On July 3, 2017, I photographed this Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) in La Macarena, Meta, Colombia. It lives in partly open country, including farmland, clearings, pastures with shrubs and forest edges, and favors places near water. It feeds mostly on insects, often sallying out over water, and also eats small fruits. In Colombia it is found from sea level to about 2,000 meters. La Macarena has become an ecotourism destination, above all for Caño Cristales, the river of five colors.

I used a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM for this one, at 1/500 sec, f/8, ISO 800. IUCN lists the Rusty-margined Flycatcher as Least Concern with a stable population, and the botanical garden just outside La Macarena invites visitors to take part in its restoration work.
