The Story
This is a Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) that I photographed near Filandia, Quindío, Colombia on June 19, 2017. It lives in partly open country, including farmland, clearings, pastures with shrubs and forest edges, and favors places near water. It feeds mostly on insects, often sallying out over water, and also eats small fruits. In Colombia it is found from sea level to about 2,000 meters. The Barbas canyon forest is part of the Barbas-Bremen protected area on the border of Quindío and Risaralda.
I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/14, ISO 400. IUCN lists the Rusty-margined Flycatcher as Least Concern with a stable population, and red howler monkeys have started using the restoration corridors planted since the 2000s to link the Barbas canyon forest with the Bremen forest.
