The Story
This Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) was photographed at Birdwatch La Conchita, at Kilometer 18 near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, at about 1,950 meters. It is found from east-central Mexico through Central America and Colombia into Ecuador and Venezuela. It lives in open and semi-open country, including low, young, brushy second growth, and it is common at sugar-water feeders and in coffee and banana plantations. Like most hummingbirds, it feeds on nectar and small insects. Adult females have a paler gray lower breast than males and more scalloping on the throat. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L for this one, at 1/2000 sec, f/6.7, ISO 3200, −1.5 EV. The San Antonio cloud forest at Kilometer 18 is recognized as an Important Bird Area and a Key Biodiversity Area, with the Multicolored Tanager as its symbol species.
