The Story
This Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) was photographed at Birdwatch La Conchita, at Kilometer 18 near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, at about 1,950 meters. It ranges from east-central Mexico through Central America and Colombia into Ecuador and Venezuela. It lives in open and semi-open country and young, brushy second growth, and it is often seen in coffee and banana plantations and at sugar-water feeders. Adult females have a paler gray lower breast than males and more scalloping on the throat. It feeds on nectar and small insects. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/500 sec, f/6.7, ISO 1600. The San Antonio cloud forest at Kilometer 18 is recognized as an Important Bird Area and a Key Biodiversity Area, with the Multicolored Tanager as its symbol species.
