The Story
This Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) was at Ecohotel La Fortuna in Yopal, Casanare, Colombia when I photographed it. It is a fairly small bird of prey, and it is often the most common raptor in its range. Except perhaps for dense rainforest, it is well adapted to most ecosystems in its range. Its call is a very high-pitched, piercing squeak. It often soars but does not hover. Yopal is the capital of Casanare. Its diet is mainly insects, lizards, snakes and small mammals, including young marmosets and other small monkeys.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/100 sec, f/5.6, ISO 200, +1 EV. IUCN lists the Roadside Hawk as Least Concern, with an increasing population.
