Pied Plover

The Story

I photographed this Pied Plover (Hoploxypterus cayanus) at Hato Barley in Tauramena, Casanare, Colombia. It has bright red eye-rings, a bold black V on its upper back and long red legs. It lives along the shores of lakes and rivers where there is sand and mud. Its range covers Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Its call is a kee-oo, with the second part lower in pitch. Tauramena lies in southwestern Casanare. Casanare lies in Colombia’s Orinoquía region, the eastern plains, at an average of about 350 meters.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and a 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, at 1/1250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400. IUCN lists the Pied Plover as Least Concern, with a stable population.
