Osprey

The Story

I photographed this Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) near La Macarena, Meta, Colombia, in February 2021. It is a fish-eating bird of prey found nearly worldwide, more than 60 centimeters long with a wingspan of up to 180 centimeters. It is brown above and mostly grayish white below. Males and females look fairly similar, but the male has a slimmer body, narrower wings and a weaker breast band than the female. It nests near water that provides enough food. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/1500 sec, f/6.7, ISO 800. Birds recorded in the La Macarena reserve up to 1978 already numbered 456 species, about 27 percent of all the birds of Colombia.
