The Story
This Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima) was photographed at Birdwatch La Conchita, at Kilometer 18 near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, at about 1,950 meters. It is endemic to Colombia, living in wet montane forest of the Western and Central Andes, mostly between 1,300 and 2,200 meters. Males have a yellow crown, face and throat, chestnut and black ear coverts, green wings and a blue breast and belly with a black central patch. In Valle del Cauca it remains fairly common even in small forest fragments, and it is the symbol species of the Kilometer 18 cloud forest. IUCN lists it as Near Threatened.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L for this one, at 1/125 sec, f/6.7, ISO 400, −2 EV. Cali, Yumbo, La Cumbre and Dagua have committed to conserving the San Antonio–Km 18 Key Biodiversity Area, its forest and its water sources.
