Green Hermit

The Story

This Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy) was at Reserva Santa Librada in Líbano, Tolima, Colombia when I photographed it. It favors primary rainforest and wet premontane forest. It lives in forest undergrowth, usually near water, and prefers hilly areas. The male is mainly dark green with a blue-green rump. The female is sooty gray below, with an even longer bill and a much longer tail. It lays one egg in a cone-shaped nest hung under a large leaf, usually over water. Cortolima lists Líbano–Santa Librada among Tolima’s birding routes. Coffee is the center of Líbano’s economy and culture.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 6400. IUCN lists the Green Hermit as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.
