Green-backed Trogon

The Story

This Green-backed Trogon (Trogon viridis) was at El Escondite Reserva Natural in Villagarzón, Putumayo, Colombia when I photographed it. The male has a dark blue head and upper breast, a green back and a yellow belly. Its song is a series of about 20 cow notes that starts slowly and speeds up toward the end. It lives in humid tropical forest and is usually the most common trogon in its range. It usually perches upright and motionless. Villagarzón is known as the heart of Putumayo for its rich biodiversity, and its town center sits at about 426 meters.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/1250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. IUCN lists the Green-backed Trogon as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.
