Gray Seedeater

The Story

I photographed this Gray Seedeater (Sporophila intermedia) during an urban photo walk through Restrepo, in Meta, Colombia, as it perched on a strand of barbed wire. Its slate-gray plumage and pale, peach-toned bill are clear here. The species feeds mainly on grass seeds, especially of Panicum grasses, and also takes small arthropods and nectar. Its nest is a small cup made from rootlets and coarse plant fibers, lined with finer fibers. It also takes small arthropods and some nectar.

I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender, at 1/180 sec, f/16, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Gray Seedeater as Least Concern, and it is found in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela.
