Golden-naped Tanager

The Story

I photographed this Golden-naped Tanager (Chalcothraupis ruficervix) at Finca La Florida, at Kilometer 18 near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, at about 2,000 meters, in February 2021. Its species name combines the Latin words for red and nape. It was long placed in Tangara, but a 2014 study moved it to the revived genus Chalcothraupis, whose name joins the Greek word for bronze with an old name for a small bird. It lives in moist montane forest and degraded former forest from Colombia to Bolivia, and its type locality is Bogotá. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/1000 sec, f/6.7, ISO 1600, −0.5 EV. The San Antonio cloud forest at Kilometer 18 is recognized as an Important Bird Area and a Key Biodiversity Area, with the Multicolored Tanager as its symbol species.
