The Story
This female Orange-chinned Parakeet (Brotogeris jugularis) was at Hacienda El Retorno in La Chamba, Guamo, Tolima, Colombia when I photographed it. It ranges from southwestern Mexico through Central America into western, central and northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, up to about 1,400 meters. It is usually seen in pairs or small flocks. It eats mainly fruits and seeds, but also flowers, nectar and insects. It nests in an old woodpecker hole, a natural cavity, or a hole it digs in a termite nest in a tree. Guamo is known as the cattle capital of Tolima, and three rivers run through the municipality: the Luisa, the Magdalena and the Saldaña.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Orange-chinned Parakeet as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.
