Female Flame-rumped Tanager

The Story

I photographed this female Flame-rumped Tanager (Ramphocelus flammigerus) at the Kairi Lodge Natural Reserve, near Manizales, Caldas, Colombia, in February 2020. Adult females of the nominate form have a blackish brown head and back, a reddish orange rump and a pale yellow belly. It feeds on fruit and arthropods, taking berries while perched and catching about half of its insects in mid-air. The nominate form is seen mostly alone or in pairs. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/800 sec, f/5.6, ISO 3200. Destino Caldas lists the endemic Colombian Chachalaca and the Black-winged Saltator among the special birds that visitors look for at Kairi.
