Female Flame-rumped Tanager

The Story

I photographed this female Flame-rumped Tanager (Ramphocelus flammigerus) at the Kairi Lodge Natural Reserve, near Manizales, Caldas, Colombia, in February 2020. The widespread yellow-rumped form forages in noisy groups of six or more, fussing and calling from thickets and visiting small fruiting trees. Females of that form have a grayish brown head and back and a pale yellow rump. The species is about 18 centimeters long. Both sexes have a crimson to dark maroon eye. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/320 sec, f/5.6, ISO 6400. Kairi opened in 2017 as a rural eco-lodge built around conservation tourism, and it aims for a positive social impact on the people who work with it.
