The Story
I photographed this female Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus) at Finca Ecoturística San Javier, in the vereda Chucuní near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia. It eats insects and other arthropods, sometimes small lizards, and also takes prey fleeing army ant swarms. It is a year-round resident. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. It favors thick undergrowth rather than the higher parts of the forest and avoids the interior of mature forest.
I photographed her with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11, at 1/350 sec, f/11, ISO 1600, +1.5 EV. Finca San Javier began as a pig farm in 1997 and turned to ecotourism in 2017, and today it offers guided birding and aims to help conserve the tropical dry forest around it.
