Rufous Motmot

La historia

I photographed this Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii) in El Caraño, in the hills above Florencia, Caquetá, Colombia, in febrero de 2020. It ranges from northeastern Honduras to western Ecuador, northern Bolivia and western Brazil. Adults are mainly cinnamon-rufous, with a black face mask and a black spot in the middle of the breast. It eats fruit, insects, crustaceans and small fish, lizards and frogs. Rufous Motmots appear on more than half of the eBird checklists from the Vereda Las Doradas hotspot in El Caraño. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/400 sec, f/5.6, ISO 3200, +0,3 EV. El Caraño holds the main intake for Florencia’s drinking water, and the Salto del Río Caraño is one of its best-known natural attractions.
