Hepatic Tanager

La historia

I photographed this Hepatic Tanager (Piranga flava), of the subspecies desidiosa, at San José de las Hermosas in Chaparral, Tolima, Colombia. eBird treats it as one species with northern, highland and lowland groups. The birds of Colombia’s mountains belong to the highland group, which lives at forest edges from Costa Rica to northern and western South America. Both sexes have dark bills and dark legs. It and the other Piranga tanagers were once placed in the tanager family but are now classified with the cardinals, in the family Cardinalidae. San José de las Hermosas is one of the rural villages of Chaparral, which lies about 163 km from Ibagué.

I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/160 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. IUCN lists the Hepatic Tanager as Least Concern.
