La historia
This is a Great Thrush (Turdus fuscater) that I photographed at the Río Blanco reserve near Manizales, Caldas, Colombia on June 24, 2017. It is considered the largest thrush in South America. It is a common bird of the Andean highlands from Venezuela to Bolivia, often in parks, backyards and farmland. It eats mainly fruit and berries, but also takes invertebrates and even eggs and nestlings, often feeding on short grass. The Río Blanco reserve covers 4,932 hectares of cloud forest on the Central Andes, about 3 kilometers northeast of Manizales.
I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Great Thrush as Least Concern with a stable population, and Río Blanco, a protected forest reserve managed by the regional authority Corpocaldas, supplies about 35 percent of the drinking water of Manizales.
