La historia
I photographed this female White-booted Racket-tail (Ocreatus underwoodii) at La Minga Ecolodge in Dapa, near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, a birding hotspot with close views of highland species. She hovered in front of a purple bloom. Her wings swept in an arc, blurred by the slow shutter, while her body stayed sharp, and the white tufts on her legs, the boots of her name, show clearly. Light filtered through the canopy gave soft, even illumination. Only males have the long racket-tipped tail, and both sexes have the white leg puffs. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L for this one, at 1/180 sec, f/6.7, ISO 800, −0,5 EV. The San Antonio cloud forest at Kilometer 18, where La Minga sits, is recognized as an Important Bird Area and a Key Biodiversity Area, with the Multicolored Tanager as its symbol species.
