La historia
On June 29, 2017, I photographed this juvenile female Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) at La Florida near Bogotá, Colombia. It is a tyrant flycatcher, a member of the family Tyrannidae. It feeds mostly on insects, catching them in mid-air in short sallies from a perch and sometimes from the ground. La Florida is a wetland and park known as the Parque Metropolitano La Florida, near the Bogotá River. Adult females are grayish brown above, with dull white underparts streaked with grayish brown and sometimes a pale yellow tinge on the belly.
I used a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM for this one, at 1/400 sec, f/7.1, ISO 100. IUCN lists the Vermilion Flycatcher as Least Concern with an increasing population, and Bogotá had about 150,000 hectares of wetlands in 1940, of which only about 1,500 remain.
