Black-capped Donacobius

La historia

I photographed this Black-capped Donacobius (Donacobius atricapilla) at Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia. Grown young stay with their parents and help raise later broods, a system of cooperative breeding. Pairs often sing in antiphonal duets. Leticia, the capital of Colombia’s Amazonas department, lies on the left bank of the Amazon where the borders of Colombia, Brazil and Peru meet, an area called Tres Fronteras. IUCN lists the Black-capped Donacobius as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.

I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/2500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. Amacayacu National Natural Park, upriver from Leticia, also helps conserve the culture of the Ticuna people who live there, and visitors can find crafts from the region’s indigenous communities.
