Azara’s Spinetail

La historia

This is an Azara’s Spinetail (Synallaxis azarae) that I photographed in Manizales, Caldas, Colombia on June 22, 2017. It is an ovenbird named after the Spanish naturalist Félix de Azara. It eats arthropods and small seeds, usually foraging in pairs within about 2 meters of the ground. It has a dark rufous crown and nape, olive-brown back, rufous-chestnut wings and a long, graduated tail. Manizales sits on the steep ridges of Colombia’s Central Cordillera, near the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which rises to 5,321 meters.

I photographed it with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. IUCN lists the Azara’s Spinetail as Least Concern with a stable population, and the city of Manizales owns and protects forest fragments such as the Ecoparque Los Yarumos inside its urban area.
