Steely-vented Hummingbird

La historia

This Steely-vented Hummingbird (Saucerottia saucerottei) perched on a slender branch at La Minga Ecolodge in Dapa, near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in the foothills, where I was birding with guide Asherita Viajera. Its metallic green plumage shone in the soft natural light against the muted greens behind it. Adult males are golden green above and glittering golden green below, with greenish to steel-blue undertail coverts. The subspecies saucerottei lives in western Colombia, including the Cauca River valley. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I photographed it with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/90 sec, f/6.7, ISO 400, +1,5 EV. Cali, Yumbo, La Cumbre and Dagua have committed to conserving the San Antonio–Km 18 Key Biodiversity Area, the cloud forest around La Minga, along with its water sources.
